‘Mapping Ethnic Health Inequalities’ Animation: University of Liverpool

We partnered with the University of Liverpool Institute of Population Health and Warwick University to design an explainer animation detailing the findings of a vital NHS Race and Health Observatory report. The project focuses on outlining critical equality and diversity gaps, alongside key recommendations, within the UK’s maternal and neonatal healthcare system.

Academic research and healthcare data are incredibly deep and nuanced. Our challenge was to take a highly technical report on ethnic health inequalities and translate it into a clear, accessible, and engaging visual story without losing the precision of the data. Working closely with lead researcher Oluwaseun Esan, we focused heavily on the specific nuances of science communication to ensure the final animation resonated with both academic peers and the wider public.

Translating complex national themes into animation requires an agile workflow. Because accuracy is everything in healthcare policy, we worked collaboratively with the university teams through multiple stages of production—from refining the script to final visual delivery. Maintaining a smooth process allowed us to seamlessly accommodate feedback and updates right up until the project was finalized, ensuring the complex data was mapped perfectly.

The final animated video provides a clear, digestible overview of a critical NHS healthcare report. By combining motion graphics with precise science communication, the project makes complex policy recommendations accessible to a broader audience, helping to drive awareness around maternal and neonatal health equality.
