We partnered with the University of Liverpool Institute of Population Health to design and develop the explainer animation for “Listen Up,” a vital research project exploring hearing health as a critical public health issue. Funded by Research England, the project translates deep academic data into an engaging visual story to highlight the scale of preventable hearing loss across the country.

The Brief & Challenge

Hearing loss is a silent public health crisis, affecting over 5 million older adults in England and costing the economy over £25 billion annually. The core challenge was to take this highly technical data – covering everything from socioeconomic health inequalities to links between hearing loss and dementia – and make it completely accessible to the public and policymakers. Working closely with creative lead Dr Dalia Tsimpida and the research team, our studio focused heavily on precise science communication to capture the nuances of the data while maintaining a clear, engaging visual flow.

The Process & Production

Bringing a national health campaign to life requires a structured, collaborative workflow. From our animation studios in Cardiff and Cowbridge, we worked through step-by-step production stages to map out the narrative. We adapted the complex research findings into clear, relatable motion graphics that illustrate key risk factors, like workplace noise exposure and the stark North-South health inequalities. Keeping the process transparent and responsive allowed us to refine the visual language at every stage, ensuring the final animation delivered a powerful call to action for ear and hearing health to become a major public health priority.

The Result

The resulting “Listen Up” animation serves as the central visual tool for the campaign, successfully launching the research to academic peers, healthcare professionals, and the wider public. By combining dynamic animation with accessible storytelling, the project helps drive awareness around timely detection and equal access to care, contributing to the national goal of building a more inclusive society.

What the Client Said About the Project

“I had the pleasure of collaborating with Savage and Gray Design Ltd for the creation of an animated video that promoted my research in hearing health. From start to finish, the team exceeded my expectations and provided exceptional service.

The process began with a consultation where I discussed with Dave my research and goals for the video. Throughout the development process, Dave was communicative, responsive, and always willing to make changes to ensure that the video met my needs.

When the final product was delivered, I was blown away by the quality of the animation and the attention to detail. The video effectively conveyed my research findings in an engaging and informative way, and I received numerous compliments on the video’s professionalism and creativity.

Overall, I cannot recommend Savage and Gray Design Ltd enough for anyone looking to create an animated video that truly captures the essence of their research or project. The team is knowledgeable, professional, and dedicated to delivering a product that exceeds expectations. I look forward to collaborating with them again in the future.”
