SAFER and SAIL: ‘Exploring Federation’ Animation

We created a series of three explainer animations for the SAFER Project to communicate complex data infrastructure concepts in a clear, accessible, and engaging way.

This animation discusses federation – an approach that enables approved researchers to analyse data securely across multiple trusted research environments, without moving sensitive data from its original location.

Working with the SAFER team, our challenge was to simplify a highly technical subject while maintaining accuracy and trust. Through carefully considered scripting, visual storytelling, and motion design, we translated complex ideas around governance, privacy, and data security into a format that could be understood by a broad audience, including data owners, researchers, and the public.

The animation explains how the SAIL Databank can build on its established foundations to explore federated systems that reduce duplication, improve efficiency, and increase the impact of linked health and public-service data.

As part of the wider three-film series, the project demonstrates how animation can make specialist topics more approachable – helping organisations communicate innovation, build trust, and engage stakeholders with clarity.
