Women’s Health Research Wales
Brand identity and website design & development
Creating a bold, accessible digital identity for Wales’ dedicated women’s health research centre.
Women’s Health Research Wales (WHRW) is a pan-Wales research centre dedicated to improving health and social care for girls, women and people assigned female at birth. Funded by Health and Care Research Wales, the centre brings together researchers, healthcare professionals, policymakers, industry, the third sector and the public to address inequalities in women’s health.
We were commissioned to develop the organisation’s brand identity and digital presence, creating a distinctive visual language and a website that could communicate a complex and wide-ranging programme of research in a clear, engaging and accessible way.
The challenge
Women’s health is a broad and increasingly important area of research, spanning the entire life course and encompassing everything from reproductive health to chronic conditions, mental health, ageing and wider health inequalities.
For Women’s Health Research Wales, the challenge was to create a brand that reflected the scale and ambition of the centre, while avoiding the visual clichés often associated with women’s health.
The identity needed to feel:
- Authoritative enough for a research-led organisation
- Approachable and inclusive for members of the public
- Contemporary and progressive
- Distinctive within the health and research landscape
- Flexible enough to work across digital and printed communications
- The accompanying website also needed to make potentially complex research information easy to navigate, while providing a platform for research projects, publications, news, opportunities and opportunities for people to get involved.
Our approach
We developed a visual identity designed to give Women’s Health Research Wales a strong and recognisable presence while reflecting its collaborative and forward-thinking approach.
The branding provides a flexible foundation that can be applied consistently across the organisation’s communications, from digital content and social media through to printed materials and presentations.
For the website, we took the same principles into the digital environment, creating a clear, accessible and content-focused WordPress website.
The design puts people and research at the heart of the experience, using strong typography, considered layouts and visual hierarchy to help users quickly find the information they need.
The site provides structured access to:
Research & Projects
Explore current and completed research across the centre’s areas of work.
Publications
A searchable collection of research papers and publications, allowing visitors to discover work by topic, project and author.
News & Insights
A platform for sharing research developments, announcements and stories from across the centre.
Get Involved
Clear routes for researchers, organisations, industry partners and members of the public to engage with the centre.
About the Centre
Information about the organisation, its vision, aims, people and partners.
Making complex information accessible
One of the most important aspects of the project was finding the balance between academic credibility and accessibility.
Women’s health research can involve complex terminology, methodologies and datasets. The website therefore needed to communicate with multiple audiences—from researchers and healthcare professionals to policymakers, third-sector organisations and members of the public.
Our approach was to create a clear information hierarchy and intuitive navigation, allowing visitors to explore the subject at the level that’s right for them.
This reflects the centre’s wider commitment to collaboration and co-production, including involving policymakers, NHS staff, the public and the third sector in setting priorities and developing research.
The result
The new Women’s Health Research Wales identity and website provide a strong, flexible and contemporary platform for a new generation of women’s health research in Wales.
The website brings together research, publications, news and opportunities in one accessible destination, while the new visual identity gives the centre a distinctive presence across its communications.
Most importantly, the digital platform has been designed to evolve. As the centre develops new research, builds partnerships and expands its network, the website provides the flexibility to grow with it.
